Fans and the Field

Now it's common sense to know not to enter the field of play during all sporting events. Not only is it clearly stated before and during almost all events, there are usually signs posted along the fence separating the public seating area, from the field itself.

So with that said, we seem to have an epidemic of this in Philly. Alright, so epidemic is a strong word; however, when was the last time this happened in a baseball game two nights in a row? Now football is a different story, as is many other events. Baseball fans for some reason... are just more passive and less likely to pull these shenanigans, in my opinion.

Seeing this brought me back to the time a few years ago when a "drunken" Yankee fan vaulted over the railing and onto the screen behind home plate.

I also remember vividly attending a Triple-A ballgame down south where, during a rain delay, a college student and his buddy decided it'd be a good idea to use the tarp as a naked slip and slide.

What I found most amusing about this story, is the fact this kid literally texted his dad in the beginning of the game to ask for permission. Not wanting his son to, well, get tazered, the father quickly asked one of the son's friends to talk him out of it. Which, as we can tell... failed.

For anyone who hasn't seen the picture of this kid pre-tazer, check it out up top, it is a great picture if I say so myself.

So now that I have given you my ramblings, I'll let you go with a moral:

Stupidity + Tazer Hungry Cop = Pain and national news coverage

Anything for a story...

So a quick little search of any news organization's website will produce quite a few frivolous, and quite pointless news stories. It's the stories like this that make your news organization look bad. It makes you look as if you're desperate to write a story just to fill that empty slot on the site. Really... that's exactly how it looks to me.

So one of these stories that I feel exemplifies this theory well, is one that I came across today on ESPN.com. Here's the title, you try to figure out why it's frivolous... "Matt Barkley bruises hand at USC's scrimmage". Maybe I am being over critical of ESPN's reporting. Maybe this is just them being everywhere, getting every story. However, I feel as if some just don't deserve front page attention.

Now ESPN is not the only source that does this; however, they are just the one I am focusing on today. Now the information provided in the "Matt Barkley article" is very relevant to some people. Most likely people living or coming from the Southern California/Los Angeles area, but the question is... Does this story really deserve a front page spot?

I know I'm getting repetitive here so I'll stop soon, but I felt as though I should at least voice my opinion as to what stories make front page news and what doesn't.

I never really made a point in this except to say I do not like frivolous news stories on the front page. I would like to hear your opinion on this, should you choose to leave it in the comments below.

Thanks for reading!

Not Being Allowed to Tweet?!?! That's Insane!

Well tweeters, or tweeties, whatever you call yourself, you better not be a Green Bay Packer, because if you are, you can kiss your pocket change goodbye! Well, of course, if your a multi-millionaire pro football player $1701 is a small price to pay to keep up your addiction. So with a world going crazy of this new micro-blog called Twitter I think we probably all saw this coming. Just look at the number of atheletes and celebrities that are posting 10-15 times a day on that! It has gone from a little known blogging center, to a massive operation with literally millions of users.

With sports figures such as Shaq, Blake Griffin, C.J. Wilson, Hasheem Thabeet, and other celebrities such as Oprah, Britney Spears, and others, the Twitter world will not be short on the number of famous athletes and celebrities tweeting anytime soon. With many joining each day, this trend will last a long time. Mr. McCarthy (Packers head coach), will most likely not be the last coach to implement a rule like this... I have a feeling the best is yet to come!

Stay tuned...

Pack Your Bags... Your Gone!

Well, yesterday was the 2009 Non-Waiver Trade Deadline and to the most part I thought it was kind of a dull one compared to others. No real blockbusters. Jake Peavy was pretty big, but that was about as big as it got. Halladay - still in Toronto. Adrian Gonzalez - still a Padre. Although this deadline was filled with prospects on the move, nothing huge was put down. It was one of the slowest deadlines in my recent memory.

Now if your a Pirates fan you should be crawling out of your skin right now your so angry. I would agree with you! According to ESPN's Baseball Tonight crew, they have traded at least one starter from every position since Jack Wilson joined the club with all three outfielders being in the past 2 years. They have traded some guys that could've kept you in the races for years to come. Jason Bay, Nate McClouth, Nyjer Morgan, Aramis Ramirez, Freddy Sanchez, Jack Wilson. I wouldnt be surprised if speedster Andrew McCutchen lasts past the 2010 Trade Deadline. But just think about the names I just threw out there for a moment. Think about how good those guys are or have become after they left you. Yes, you may have gotten Tim Alderson for one guy, but he wont save the franchise. He may be good, but he is the only decent prospect that can be really good down the road that you guys have gotten out of all your 100 deals. All we know, is that if the Bucs can't get it together in the next few seasons, Pirates fans will be pointing their finger at one group of people, the GM, and his staff.

Now there were some actual "surprises" that happened on deadline day. For the first time in the past 50 years the Yankees didnt make a blockbuster deal on July 31. The Red Sox, didn't disappoint. They got All-Star catcher Victor Martinez for Justin Masterson and a few others. The only truly big deal was Jake Peavy for Aaron Poreda and a couple minor leaguers.

All in all, this trade deadline was a slow one, but in the long run, we still have the waivers and we still have a long season left. Who know what type of impact these players may make. So from now, all we can do is hope for the best and look forward to next year!

The Machine That Is Pujols

We have all heard of Albert Pujols by now. He is the monster in St. Louis who has more multiple home-run games than a lot of guys have home runs. He is an animal, always hungry to take you out of the stadium. He is one of the most unbelievable hitter I have personally ever seen. As the Baseball Tonight crew puts it, "He is an average hitter who hits for power, also." By average, they mean he hits for a high average, not that he is equal to an average hitter. This guy surprised everyone at how good he became. He was drafted in the 13th round in the 1999 draft. A draft that produced players the caliber of Josh Hamilton, Josh Beckett, Ben Sheets, Barry Zito, Brett Myers, Alex Rios, and many others. He however, did not belong in those names at the time. Many teams passed on him. He became, in my opinion, one of the all-time most valuable late round draft picks, next to Mike Piazza. It is almost hard to comprehend how everyone can pass on someone who is now the best hitter in the majors and has a shot at the Triple Crown. Good scouting can go a long way in the world of pro baseball, if you can find those diamonds in the rough, you can build a gold mine of a farm system. I'm sure the scout that found Pujols god himself a bonus or something, the guy deserves it for bringing St. Louis the best player in the game right now!

Albert, who is only 29, will most likely pass 450 home runs if he stays on pace for the rest of his career. He may even top 500, which wouldn't be a big surprise. He will definitely make it to the Hall of Fame, unless something big and unexpected comes up, and he will go down in history as one of the greatest players to ever play MLB.

He is, a machine.
